On Wednesday, pulsating rhythms from Cameroon arrive as Valérie Ekoumé guests Musik i parken. Raised in Cameroon and long based in France, she spent eight years as part of Manu Dibango’s Soul Makossa Gang, one of Africa’s most influential music groups and a life‑changing experience for her. The influence of those eight years on stage with the legend Dibango is clearly audible when Valérie performs, and her strong presence captures the audience through her singing.

Her music is a mix of Cameroonian traditions such as assiko, makossa, essèwè, and manganbeu — lively and popular rhythms in Cameroon. Central to the sound is the nkulen, a traditional Central African percussion instrument. On her tour La Danse de l’Éléphant, Ékoumé has played stages including Afrika Festival in Würzburg, Festival Les Nuits d’Afrique in Montréal, Africa Oyé in Liverpool, and Esplanade in Singapore.

Valérie Ékoumé has released two solo albums: KWIN NA KINGUE (2017), which made RFI’s list of the year’s top African albums, and the follow‑up MONÈ (2022), which RFI Musique described as “an exhilarating record whose lively musicality need not detract from its purpose.”

We will experience a concert with strong driving, danceable rhythms — so put on your dancing shoes!

For the fifth summer in a row, Etnografiska museet presents Musik i parken. Over ten Wednesday evenings, concert nights are arranged in collaboration with Stallet Världens Musik on our beautiful outdoor stage. Come hang out on Matmekka’s outdoor terrace or in the hammocks and listen to sweet tunes and birdsong in the evening sun.
