In a small village in northern Senegal, love has struck Banel and Adama. The young couple lives completely intertwined whenever they can. If Banel had her way, they would be inseparable. But Adama’s duties demand his attention. Until now, he has chosen not to follow in his older brother’s footsteps as the village chief. When severe drought, illness, and death affect their community, Adama begins to doubt. Is it actually his neglect of tradition that has caused these hardships? Doubt drives a wedge between the young lovers and pushes Banel further to the margins of the village. Love drives her deeper into madness and desperation.
