KILEMA: FAMILY CONCERT

ree

KILEMA was born and raised in southeastern Madagascar but has been based in Spain for many years. He travels the world, sharing a part of Madagascar’s rich cultural heritage through his music.

Kilema’s musical journey began in the church, but before long he became interested in the traditional string instruments unique to Madagascar, such as the Marovany and Valiha.

In the early 1990s, Kilema joined the acclaimed Justin Vali Trio, with whom he toured worldwide for several years.

Today, he dedicates much of his career to introducing the music of Madagascar to younger audiences, and he has toured in Sweden several times over the years, performing in schools and libraries among other venues.

With his warm personality and humble presence, Kilema has the ability to draw everyone—regardless of age—into the music. He plays a range of self-made instruments, sings, and tells stories.

The music of Madagascar is a fascinating blend of East African, Asian, and Oceanic influences, often characterized by fast, driving rhythms and beautiful vocal harmonies.

Kilema will give two concerts at Pygméteatern in collaboration with Afrikultur: an evening concert on Saturday and a family concert on Sunday.

Sunday’s concert is especially designed for children aged 4 to 10, but everyone is welcome!

Klubb Mariama is carried out with the support of the Swedish Arts Council, Region Stockholm, and the City of Stockholm, in collaboration with Bilda Studieförbund.
