In 2017, author Shiro Koinange and publisher Angela Wachuka quit their jobs to save a dilapidated colonial library in central Nairobi. With determination, charisma, and a deep love of literature, they take on the city’s bureaucracy and a large-scale renovation project, bringing together artists, architects, technicians, and librarians around the vision of Book Bunk – a vibrant hub for knowledge. How to Build a Library reveals a postcolonial dilemma: what do we do with a legacy we do not want but that still shapes us – erase it or remember it?
